Although there are several crimes related to financial institutions that are felonies (such as harming a person when attempting to commit a bank robbery), we are not aware of any state or federal law that makes it a felony to harm, threaten or endanger a bank officer in a more general context.
For resources related to our guidance, please see:
- Illinois Criminal Code, 720 ILCS 5/17-10.6 (Defining the following crimes related to financial institutions, from the Illinois Financial Crime Law of 2003: Misappropriation of financial institution property, commercial bribery of financial institution, financial institution fraud, loan fraud, concealment of collateral, financial institution robbery, conspiracy to commit a financial crime, and continuing financial crimes enterprise.)
- United States Code, 18 USC 2113 Bank robbery and incidental crimes (“Whoever, in committing, or in attempting to commit, any offense defined in subsections (a) and (b) of this section, assaults any person, or puts in jeopardy the life of any person by the use of a dangerous weapon or device, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty-five years, or both.”)
