Do we need an individual’s social security number to open an account? An individual from Mexico wants to open an account with his taxpayer identification number.

No, you are not required to obtain a social security number to open an account for a non-U.S. person. In lieu of a social security number for a non-U.S. person, the Customer Identification Program (CIP) rules require you to obtain one or more of the following: a taxpayer identification number, passport number and country of issuance, alien identification card number, or number and country of issuance of any other government-issued document evidencing nationality or residence and bearing a photograph or similar safeguard.
