Can a payable on death (POD) account have an authorized signer?

We see no reason why a Payable on Death (“POD”) account would be restricted from having an authorized signer who is not an account holder, provided that your bank’s policies and procedures allow for it.

Under the Illinois Trust and Payable on Death Accounts Act, any person holding a POD account may change the designated beneficiaries at any time, and they may withdraw any amount of monies from the account, without the knowledge or consent of the account’s beneficiaries, or even of any co-holders (co-trustees) of the account. In other words, the beneficiaries have no special rights unless and until all of the POD account holders are deceased. Other than that characteristic of a POD account, we do not view a POD account as being any different than your other Demand Deposit Accounts.
